Mean is the sum of a set of numbers divided by the total amount of numbers in that set.
For example: The grade 707 class got the following marks on their science tests. The tests were out of 100 marks.
61,82,75,76, 87, 87, 96, 53, 75, 73, 69, 91, 47, 84, 91
My first step to find mean is to add all of the numbers in the set together. When I add these numbers together, I get 1 149. Now I count how many numbers are in the set. There are 15 numbers in this particular set. I take the sum from step 1 and divided it by the total in the set.
1 149 ÷ 15
This will give me the mean score, or the class average score on the test.
The mean score is 76.6
