To add fractions we must first make sure our denominators are the same. We must find equivalent fractions if our denominators are different. For example, if I have 1/2 + 1/4 I have different denominators. I know that 2 goes into 4, so I can leave the 1/4 the same, and find an equivalent fraction to 1/2 that has a denominator of 4.
1/2 = 2/4
so I end up with:
2/4 + 1/4
Now I add the numerators but leave the denominators the same.
2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4
